Finally Ready to Help Others Like Me

Hey, so I've been clean for almost 3 years now and honestly it changed everything. My sponsor keeps telling me I should think about becoming a counselor because I'm always the one people call at 2am when they're struggling. I love being there for them but I have no clue where to even start with this career path. Could you break down what an addiction counselor actually does day to day? Like what's the role really about beyond just talking to people? Thanks!

  • That's awesome you're 3 years in and wanting to give back. My cousin went through something similar, got sober at 26 and eventually became a counselor. It's way more than just talking though. You're doing assessments, creating treatment plans, running group sessions, coordinating with families and other providers, tons of paperwork honestly. You also need specific certifications depending on your state. There's a breakdown at what does an addiction counselor do that covers the actual responsibilities. My cousin says the hardest part is managing boundaries because you care so much. But if you're already doing crisis calls, you've got the heart for it. Look into CADC or similar certifications in your area to start.
