Facebook Login does not work and returns "unknown error"

Hello All,
I hope someone can help me as this issue is giving me a headache.

I had setup social login for facebook and twitter. They used to work fine but something happened and now facebook login does not work while twitter is completely fine.

what happens is when you attempt to login via facebook, the page begin to load and I see right underneath the logon buttons in red that flashes briefly and error has occuered and the page just refreshes.

I have confirmed the app on facebook and the configuration on wordpress. I'm not sure how i can troubleshoot/debug this to see what's going on. On facebook developer's app page it just shows "unknown error" and the app is approved.

any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
